Final Round, Part 2

For the final post of Mascara March Madness I will be reviewing Bare Minerals Flawless Definition mascara. This mascara was provided to me by the company at my request. Let's look at some photos of the packaging.

They sent me a sample size. The packaging was pretty basic, and the applicator had lots of short bristles. That type of applicator tends to make for easy application and lots of lash separation. Here's my eye with the mascara.

Application was easy and it did separate my lashes. There was no "wow" factor. Length, volume, and curl were added, but they were minimal. Anything is an improvement over my bare lashes, but I wouldn't reach for this mascara if I were looking to really accentuate my eyes. I would recommend this mascara to a novice, or someone who was going for a more natural look.

Final Round: Almay One Coat Nourishing vs Bare Minerals Flawless Definition

Now for the final round of reviews...then it's giveaway time! First up is Almay One Coat Nourishing which I purchased at the recommendation of a reader. It promises a triple effect of added length, volume, and curl. I opened up the bottle to find a unique looking applicator.

The bristles were thick and held A LOT of mascara. Application proved to be a little difficult because of all the mascara the brush held. It went on really thick and it took quite a few wriggles of the brush to smooth it out. Although it went on thick, the formula was workable because it did not dry quickly and it did not remain clumpy. Here are my lashes after application. (Sorry for the scary, super-wide eye!)
There's some curl, especially near the inner part of my eye. Length is definitely improved, and there's some added volume as well. I did notice a bit of an uneven lash separation. Also, as I was removing the product it became apparent how much mascara was actually on my lashes. I'm not sure if that's necessarily a bad thing, but it was a bit of a messy removal. The effects of the Almay are nice, but application and clean up weren't the easiest. It's a nice, comprehensive mascara for someone who has the time and skill to work with it a bit.

Round 2, Part 2: LashGASM vs Lycra Lash Extender

A few days late, but here is the other half of Round 2 of Mascara March Madness. For this post I will be reviewing Rimmel's Lycra Lash Extender. They promise 60% more length and 50% more curve. I certainly don't have the tools to measure that accurately (or at all) so let's see what the visuals show!

It's definitely an improvement from my bare lashes, but I wouldn't consider this length anything to get excited about. I will give credit where credit is due: Lycra Lash Extender did have a very nice application. The mascara went on easily and evenly, with zero clumping. It separated my lashes a bit but it didn't really plump them up much. There wasn't much added curl, either. Rimmel's Lycra Lash Extender isn't the worst mascara I've ever used, but it's definitely not the best. As far as volume, length, and curl go, you can definitely get more bang for your buck from other products. Because of the ease of application, however, I would recommend this mascara to someone who is new to the world of makeup, or someone looking for a mascara that they can quickly apply on their way out the door.

Too Faced Cosmetics: LashGASM Mascara Review

Note: For Round 2 of Mascara March Madness, I am reviewing Rimmel's Lycra Lash Extender, which I purchased myself, as well as LashGASM by Too Faced Cosmetics. The LashGASM mascara was provided to me by Too Faced Cosmetics for this review; therefore, I am giving them the courtesy of a separate blog post.

Too Faced Cosmetics: LashGASM Mascara
It was like Christmas Day when this packaged arrived in the mail for me. It came in an adorable pink box!
I opened the box and was greeted by some fun pink packing confetti, a sassy looking package, and a friendly personalized message from Too Faced's web marketing coordinator. Thanks, Bre!
Here's a closeup of the package. I love the pink and gold together.
The bottle itself was fun yet elegant.
Here's the wand.
The applicator was made of numerous short, cone shaped bristles.
As I applied the LashGASM, I noticed my lashes being separated. The separation was distinct and the mascara lengthened my lashes nicely. As I continued the application, the volume kicked it. I'm impressed by the way this mascara was able to thicken my lashes and still maintain a level of separation. Here's a photo of my lashes after a coat of LashGASM.
If you recall the picture of my bare lashes from my previous post, you can see the length and slight curl provided by LashGASM. Notice the volume LashGASM added to my lashes. Overall I was very impressed by LashGASM and would recommend it to anyone looking for an all-in-one mascara that can provide a good amount of length, curl, and volume to their lashes.

Round 1: Illegal Length vs The Falsies Flared

For Mascara March Madness, I'm rating all the mascaras I review on a scale I created which you will see at the end of this post. I'll be reviewing two mascaras at a time, pitting them against each other in true March Madness bracket style! One mascara will "win" in each post. I'll post the rating chart with each review I do, and I'll continue to fill it in as we go along. I'll be doing four more reviews over the next week and a half, and then it will be giveaway time! Which ever mascara has the best rating will be the one I give away. In the event of a tie, I'll just pick one for the giveaway.

I'm excited to get these reviews rolling, and I'm going to start by trying the two Maybelline mascaras that I purchased: Maybelline The Falsies Flared Mascara, and Maybelline Illegal Length Mascara. Let's start by taking a look at my bare lashes.

Scary sight! Now you know why I don't like to leave the house without mascara on. I need a mascara that does it all, lengthens, thickens, and curls. First I tried Illegal Length. Here's a photo of the case and applicator.

The applicator looked pretty typical to me, average length and amount of bristles. Application was easy, the makeup went on smoothly with no clumps. Here's a picture of my lashes after a coat of Illegal Length.
There's definitely a difference from the original picture. Illegal Length provided what its name said it would, length. It did thicken my lashes a bit. There really wasn't any added curl, but the length kind of made up for that. Overall, It's not everything I'm looking for, but I would use it again and recommend it to someone who is looking for an inexpensive mascara to lengthen their lashes.

Moving on to the Falsies Flared. The name had me excited because false lashes are so dramatic and that's the kind of help I need for my lashes. Here's the case and wand.

The applicator was thick and curved, so I was hoping for some serious curl and volume. The Falsies Flared ended up falling flat. Here are my lashes after application.
The mascara went on unevenly and my lashes stuck together. While it did curl parts of my lashes slightly (notice the flat spot in the middle), there was such a lack of length and volume that it really didn't change the look of my lashes much. This mascara might be good for someone with naturally long lashes, but I would not recommend it.

The winner of this round is definitely Illegal Length!
